Celebrating Independence Day: American Wilderness Alaska

There is much to celebrate in America. We Americans love our independent ways of being and thinking. When we are caught up in the busyness of everyday life, it’s hard to notice the intrusions on independent thinking and acting from inner promptings. There are obligations and responsibilities to be met, problems to handle, others to take care of that demand attention. Even more subtle than that, the ever-present social media feed has an intensive pull on attention, an underlying homogeneity of thought, depending which pigeonhole you’ve been placed in.

A great way to break out and restore independence is to gain a fresh perspective by immersing yourself in the wild places of America the beautiful.

Revitalize the states of wonder and awe that are evoked by the immensity and magnificence of wilderness. Thankfully, Americans have had the foresight to preserve wide swaths of land in national parks, and that there are vast spaces like Alaska that defy untrammeled growth of human development.

After 12 wonder-filled days in Alaska, I feel restored and revitalized. In a state that is 4 times bigger than California, one fifth the size of the lower 48 states, and could fit California, Montana, and Texas all within its borders, it’s astounding. 586,000 square miles with 3 main cities and a total population of 733,406 people. Open space is an understatement!

Viewpoints from a train, bus, and a small plane, there were many sights that evoked the feeling of sacredness. Mt. Denali, whale watching and glaciers immersed me in awe and gratitude to be alive and blessed enough to bear witness to the immense beauty and power of nature.

No matter where you are, may you celebrate an independent mind and free spirit. May you find wild places to restore your soul and bring vitality to your energy and outlook.

May you be awed by the beauty surrounding you.
